23rd Infantry, State Color. Nicknamed "Birney's Zouaves" the 23rd was composed entirely of men from Philadelphia and Luzerne counties. The regiment received the colors on December 15, 1861 after most of the members re-enlisted for three year terms after the three-month regiment was mustered out of service. The regiment retired the colors at the conclusion of the Fredericksburg Campaign in December 1862, and the regiment carried other flags throughout the rest of its service until September 1864.
